Weekly Wrap-Up 7.22.12

Do you struggle with worry and anxiety?  We all do at some point in our lives.  This week, Dr. Bethancourt addressed this topic as he taught through Matthew 6:24-34.  He talked about three myths about anxiety.  (1) Being anxious can solve my problems.  (2) Anxiety saves time.   (3) Anxiety secures my provision.  Being anxious does not help us.  The presence of worry means there is an absence of faith.  We are commanded not to worry.  We should obey this command because our society is defined by stress and we are called to be set apart from the world.  We also have a Heavenly Father who is trustworthy and who knows what we need.  The challenge is to trust God and submit to His Lordship.

Weekly Wrap-Up 7.8.12

This week in Kingdom First, Dr. Moore taught through Luke 14:12-33. He said the gospel does not teach that one can be saved at some time in the past and then live however he wants. Satan is trying to kill and destroy and he does so by giving half-truths. He will try to paint a picture of the gospel and the cross that says, “Oh, that doesn’t matter. Come on in.” But Christ says we should invite those into the kingdom that we would not ordinarily think of. Though this is an open invitation, there is a narrowness to it as well. There must be crucifixion of those natural affections.

Prayer Requests:

Kara’s sister is coming home from Ukraine.

Mrs. Cunningham’s back epidural had good results.

Remember Drew and Emily Griffin. Sunday was their last with us in Kingdom First. They will be going to Arkansas for a year to work at their home church and then they will be moving to New York to plant a church.

Weekly Wrap-Up 7.1.12

This week in Kingdom First Phillip Bethancourt taught on Matthew 25:14-30. He said that all of us need to think about what it looks like to be a faithful servant of the kingdom. In this passage the master has purchased these servants, and he has gien them some of his property of which they are to be in charge. We have been entrusted with gifts from God. All of us either steward or squander these gifts. This servant hid his master’s money—it was not his. The gifts God has given us are not ours. They are his. Just as this servant had to give accountability for how he used his portion of the master’s money, so shall there be accountability for us. “Faithful” is the key word in this passage. This is what the master praises, and he connects faithfulness to joy. Kingdom joy comes from kingdom faithfulness.

Weekly Wrap-Up 6.24.12

This week in Kingdom First, Daniel Patterson taught through Genesis 50:15-26. As we considered the story of Joseph’s individual life in the context of God’s larger redemptive purposes, we saw a truth of the gospel illustrated in seed form in this Old Testament text: namely, the promises of God are achieved only through the forgiveness of sins. In addition, this passage underscores the goodness and extent of God’s providential care for his people, and functions to show us how, often, the individual stories of our lives are at the same time much less and much more important than we think: much less in that God is in no way constrained to make sure the script of our lives play out exactly as we might wish, but much more in that even those things we see as setbacks and tragedies, and even evil, will be leveraged for our ultimate good by God to conform us to Christ and prepare us to reign with him in eternity. Finally, we see how this text points ultimately to a new and better Joseph, one who will also be laid in a temporary tomb looking ahead to God’s promises, but one who will come out of that tomb not as a skeleton to be moved to the Promised Land, but as a Risen King who will usher in the Promised Land—which he will share with all those who identify with him and his story, who find forgiveness in his blood, who, in short, are those of whom the New Testament says Jesus “is not ashamed to call brothers” (Heb 2:11).

Weekly Wrap-Up 6.17.12

This week in Kingdom First Drew Griffin taught through 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:6. He explained the truth that in the gospel there is transformation. Part of this transformation is the putting away of evil deeds by holy living. Moses veiled his face because the glory was fading. We can be bold because the glory revealed to us is unfading. God has many people in our city and therefore we must not fail to be bold because we can and will meet resistance.
