This week in Kingdom First, Dr. Moore continued our study in the book of Colossians and taught through 2:1-8. He showed us that it is easy to read Colossians and see it as a deep theological book and therefore see it as distant, but it is a very personal book. Paul is showing the Colossians what it is like to be like Christ. Sometimes this even means to have the right kind of worry. Just like children are dependent upon their parents, so the churches were dependent upon Paul and because of this it caused him much concern when they drifted away from the gospel. He wants to show them that the real mystery is not about Christ, but that it is Christ. It is not as if you get wisdom and knowledge and then get Christ. You get Christ and then wisdom and he leads you to wisdom and knowledge. If you have received Christ then walk in him.

This week in Kingdom First, Jeremy Lloyd continued our study in the book of Colossians. Teaching through 1:24-29 he showed us how this world looks at someone who rejoices in his sufferings as very strange. However, this is exactly what the Apostle Paul does. He sees it as a privilege to suffer for the sake of the gospel. He also see suffering as a way in which God is able to chip away parts of his life that do not resemble Christ.

Paul also speaks of the gospel as the mystery hidden for ages and generations. But for him, this mystery was not so much a what as it was a who. Paul sees this mystery as the incarnate Son of God that came from heaven and is the exact representation of God’s nature. The marvelous part of this mystery is that Christ dwells within all of those who are God’s children and that is the guarantee of their future glory which God will give to them.

This week in Kingdom First, Phillip Bethancourt continued our study in the book of Colossians. Teaching from 1:15-23 he explained that Paul has discussed Christ as conqueror and now he speaks of him as creator. Paul is attributing the act of creation to Christ. Not only were all things created by him and through him but they were also created for him. This is the inheritance that the Father has given unto him. He is the agent by which all things hold together. In our lives, we often feel as if we are what holds things together, but it is Christ, not us.

Christ is the head of the church. When Paul says, “In him fullness of God was pleased to dwell” he means it was not a stretch or a chore for God to become flesh and dwell among us. He came and did this to reconcile us to God. Because of this reality, everything that Christ is and all that he has is ours.

Announcements:

Drew Griffin announced that the men’s book study will be starting up again on this coming Saturday February 11 at eight o’clock at the Krispy Kreme on Bardstown Road. More information will be posted on this later this week.

Prayer Requests:

Kara Hartman’s sister will be going on a mission trip to Kiev later this year.

Dr. Joe Crider will be Highview’s new interim worship leader.

Kristin and David Riggs daughter, Ellie, is having stomach issue and they have not been able to find out why. Doctors may have to do further tests.

Chris Gilmore’s son is beginning to have questions about his mother who passed away. Pray that he will have understanding.

This week in Kingdom First, Phillip Bethancourt continued our study in the book of Colossians. Teaching through 1:9-14, he emphasized that in this passage Paul is speaking of salvation for the believer being a transferal from darkness into light. Part of what those who are saved need to be pursuing is a knowledge of the will of God. A problem with this is that many people treat God’s will as a map instead of a compass. But Paul makes a connection between knowing the will of God and wisdom. When we walk in a manner worthy of the Lord we will increase in wisdom. Wisdom then leads us unto holiness. Paul prays that the Colossians will be strengthened with all power of the knowledge of God.

This week in Kingdom First, Phillip Bethancourt began our new study in the book of Colossians. He said that letters have changed the history of the world and no letters are more important than those of the New Testament. The Apostle Paul is writing to the church at Colossae in order to encourage them to press on in the faith. He is also writing to address heresy that had crept in and was attacking the gospel. Paul says that he thanks God for the Colossians in his prayers. This is an earnest prayer from a genuine heart and this type of attitude ought to be mirrored in our prayers. Paul did not celebrate in the “success” of this church but in the fact that they were faithful to the gospel.
