Weekly Wrap-Up 1.15.12

This week in Kingdom First, Dr. Moore worked through 1 Corinthians 5:9-6:11, examining how Christians ought to understand the relationship of the church to the outside world. All too often, in the way we engage the culture, Christians tend to sound too much like “that guy” we all know who frames his whole self-perception on his “glory days” on the high school football field. Such an approach ignores the present realities, let alone the future, in order to focus on what is, in all reality, meaningless. Dr. Moore showed us how this passage compels Christians to the same kind of calm Jesus put on display when standing before the Sanhedrin and when dealing with the kingdoms of this world—precisely because we know how things will end, how God will put all things right in the coming kingdom of Christ. To that end, we in the church ought not rage against the unbelieving world; neither should we be surprised when sinners act like sinners. Instead, this passage asserts that those who call themselves Christians are to be judged more closely. The church is called to judge not the outside world, but those on the inside (5:12), balancing Paul’s “such were some of you,” (6:11) with “the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God” (6:9). As Christians engage the culture, then, we ought not act like we’re losing. We must speak to the illusion of sin with the gospel, and deal all the more closely with sin inside the church itself—for the church is the embryonic form of that which will continue on forever.

Weekly Wrap-Up 1.1.12

This week in Kingdom First, Phillip Bethancourt preached through the book of 3 John: a small book, often looked over, but one that is similarly full of wisdom. Phillip began by showing how the book of 3 John shows us how our greatest joy ought to be derived from seeing others grow. Next, Phillip showed through the example of Gaius investing in missionaries how the book of 3 John illustrates the principle that faith in Christ leads to action and obedience. Conversely, the book of 3 John shows in the person of Diotrephes an example of what pride looks like and what if rejects: namely, authority; wholesome talk; hospitality; and unity. In light of all this, Phillip asked, how can we resolve to serve, and to show grace in truth in 2012?
