Weekly Wrap-Up 1/29/12

This week in Kingdom First, Phillip Bethancourt continued our study in the book of Colossians. Teaching through 1:9-14, he emphasized that in this passage Paul is speaking of salvation for the believer being a transferal from darkness into light. Part of what those who are saved need to be pursuing is a knowledge of the will of God. A problem with this is that many people treat God’s will as a map instead of a compass.  But Paul makes a connection between knowing the will of God and wisdom. When we walk in a manner worthy of the Lord we will increase in wisdom. Wisdom then leads us unto holiness. Paul prays that the Colossians will be strengthened with all power of the knowledge of God.

Weekly Write-Up 1.21.12

This week in Kingdom First, Phillip Bethancourt began our new study in the book of Colossians. He said that letters have changed the history of the world and no letters are more important than those of the New Testament. The Apostle Paul is writing to the church at Colossae in order to encourage them to press on in the faith. He is also writing to address heresy that had crept in and was attacking the gospel. Paul says that he thanks God for the Colossians in his prayers. This is an earnest prayer from a genuine heart and this type of attitude ought to be mirrored in our prayers. Paul did not celebrate in the “success” of this church but in the fact that they were faithful to the gospel.

Announcements:

Katy Murphy announced that there will be training at Immanuel Baptist church next Sunday for anyone who would like to go the the Louisville abortion clinic and counsel women who are about to have abortions.

Prayer Requests:

Highview has two mission teams on the field.

Noami has a friend who recently found out that her baby has stage four brain cancer.

Mrs. Brewer’s dad is having health complications.

Weekly Wrap-Up 1.15.12

This week in Kingdom First, Dr. Moore worked through 1 Corinthians 5:9-6:11, examining how Christians ought to understand the relationship of the church to the outside world. All too often, in the way we engage the culture, Christians tend to sound too much like “that guy” we all know who frames his whole self-perception on his “glory days” on the high school football field. Such an approach ignores the present realities, let alone the future, in order to focus on what is, in all reality, meaningless. Dr. Moore showed us how this passage compels Christians to the same kind of calm Jesus put on display when standing before the Sanhedrin and when dealing with the kingdoms of this world—precisely because we know how things will end, how God will put all things right in the coming kingdom of Christ. To that end, we in the church ought not rage against the unbelieving world; neither should we be surprised when sinners act like sinners. Instead, this passage asserts that those who call themselves Christians are to be judged more closely. The church is called to judge not the outside world, but those on the inside (5:12), balancing Paul’s “such were some of you,” (6:11) with “the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God” (6:9). As Christians engage the culture, then, we ought not act like we’re losing. We must speak to the illusion of sin with the gospel, and deal all the more closely with sin inside the church itself—for the church is the embryonic form of that which will continue on forever.
